Biertan, the Old Saxon City


70 km from Sibiu
Biertan was first mentioned in 1283. The fortified church is one of the most impressive Saxon peasant forts in Transilvania. In its present shape, the church was built in the first quarter of the 16th century. The fortifications are of an earlier date. The village is known also for its wines.
