Once upon a time, advertisements could argue with each other

 Today there are advertising regulations that prohibit many things that were allowed in the old days. Anyway, there were years when creatives (and car brands) could "argue" with each other through humorous advertisements. Those times were in 2007. The "dispute" took place in the pages of numerous newspapers and magazines, where advertising was bought. BMW, Audi, Subaru and Bentley participated (or got into the conversation themselves).  The world still uses the predefined formats that prevailed in the early days of the Internet, when pages were mostly read on a desktop/laptop.
