Retezat National Park in Romania - one of the wildest areas in Europe

 Declared a National Park in 1935. The Retezat Reserve with over 80 glacial lakes is one of the most important tourist destinations.

Established in 1935, Retezat National Park is the oldest of its kind in Romania. More than a third of glacial lakes in Romania are located within Retezat National Park. The existence of more than a third of the Romanian flora species is one of the reasons for which this area has been declared a national park. The forests cover nearly half of the Retezat National Park area. Because of its outstanding natural values and habitat management, Retezat National Park has become a PAN Park in October 2004. PAN Parks Wilderness area in Retezat provides homeland for all the iconic species of a first-class Carpathian wilderness. Since 1980, Retezat National Park is included in the UNESCO's network of Biosphere Reserves. Retezat's Biosphere Reserve is not inhabited, thus belongs in the wildest of  its kind.
