Amazing castles in Wales

 Carew Castle, Wales

South Wales; originally a Norman castle, Carew is one of the most magnificent castles of south Wales in the flat land around the tidal Carew river. The Castle was greatly improved and extended in the beginning of 16th century to Elizabethan manor. Was partly destroyed during the Civil War and finally abandoned in 1686. Next to the Castle there is the Carew Tidal Mill also from the 16th century, even though the present building dates from the early 19th century.

Beaumaris Castle is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd. Constructed after Conwy, Caernarfon, and Harlech, this massive fortress was never fully completed due to a lack of funds and other pressing matters for Edward I in Scotland. The castle features four concentric rings, a water moat, and its own dock. Despite being nicknamed "the greatest castle never built," Beaumaris Castle remains an impressive example of medieval military architecture.

      Amazing castles in Wales

Wales is renowned for its impressive castles, each with its own fascinating history and architectural beauty. Here are some of the most remarkable castles you might want to explore:

      1. Powis Castle

         - Located in Mid-Wales, Powis Castle is one of the few castles that are still inhabited today. While the family resides in their quarters, most of the castle is open to the public. The vast and stunning gardens, described as the best Baroque gardens in Britain, feature an Italianate terrace, flower gardens with rare and sub-tropical plants, and a fine collection of yew hedges. Inside the castle, you'll find elegant decorations, including paintings, sculptures, and furniture. The Clive Museum on-site houses objects from India and the Far East collected by the Clive family. The castle dates back to the 13th century and has passed through various noble families over time.

      2. Beaumaris Castle

         - see above

      3. Caernarfon Castle

         - Another gem in Wales, Caernarfon Castle is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built by Edward I and his architect James of St George. The castle's imposing structure includes four concentric rings, a water moat, and a commanding presence. Caernarfon Castle played a significant role in Welsh history and remains a must-visit for history enthusiasts⁵.

      4. Caerphilly Castle

         - Caerphilly Castle, located in South Wales, is the largest castle in Wales and the second-largest in the UK. Its impressive fortifications, including water defenses and massive gatehouses, make it a remarkable sight. The castle was built by Gilbert de Clare during the late 13th century and has a rich history. Visitors can explore its towers, walls, and picturesque surroundings.

      5. Conwy Castle, Raglan Castle, and Harlech Castle

         - These castles are also worth mentioning. Conwy Castle stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Conwy River, while Raglan Castle boasts a unique blend of medieval and Renaissance architecture. Harlech Castle, perched on a cliff, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
